Flood Plains
Within the embankments there is the flood plain environment, rich in vegetation and shelter for several bird species. Flood plains are formed by wetlands, riparian woods, and even small islands. They have various origins: some of them are abandoned quarries, others are oxbows, loops of the river Po where the stream arrives only during floods, others are basins, that is outlet areas for bigger floods. The flood plain environment has a great capacity to absorb the water organic substances, and therefore contributes to reduce river pollution.
